Inspired by the power of the voice, Philip Hamilton '82 creates an original a cappella performance that fuses global rhythms and influences. Voices combines unique, international vocal tones and techniques--such as Tuvan throat singing, Balinese monkey-chanting, and hip-hop's beat-boxing--with the rich sounds of diverse a cappella singing styles, including doo-wop, Bulgarian choirs, barbershop quartets, South African miners' songs, and Gregorian chants. Philip Hamilton, Ben Stevens and members of Voices bring you a series of hour-long workshops that cover musical and business topics, from arranging, to copyright, to managing. A cappella groups and individual vocal performers are welcome. Tickets: $7 online, $10 at the door; one ticket entitles the bearer to attend any or all of the planned workshops.]]> Daytime Schedule for the Vermont A Cappella Summit *Times subject to change 9:30am Registration in the lobby of the Center for the Arts 10am-noon Vocal Improvisation with Philip Hamilton. Hamilton leads a vocal workshop designed to increase participant's ability to improvise sounds in group and solo settings. This workshop also utilizes breathing exercises designed to increase one's awareness of the voice and its range of possibilities. He has worked with some of the leading musical minds of our time including John Cage, Donald Fagen,(Steely Dan) Pat Metheny, Gilberto Gil and Vernon Reid. This is a two hour workshop. Noon Lunch 1:30-3pm Masterclass with celebrity panel Each group will perform 1-2 songs, receive feedback from our celebrity panel (members Voices, Philip Hamilton, Ben Stevens and others!), perform again, and then hear from the audience. It's an educational experience, on and off the stage. 3pm Essential Listening with Ben Stevens What should we listen to, and how should we listen? A critical and creative approach to the contemporary a cappella canon, or: Alexander technique for the innerest of ears. More to come...
